Canaan posts 68% revenue drop as Bitcoin treasury swells

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: Canaan's Q2 revenue cratered 68% to $31.9 million with a $97.6 million loss, even as its Bitcoin treasury hit records. BTC held near $78,737, up 0.1%, and barely reacted.

  • Q2 revenue fell 68% to $31.9 million, below the $35M to $45M guidance, with a $97.6 million net loss.
  • Canaan held roughly 1,915.5 BTC and 3,951.7 ETH, with more than half its Bitcoin pledged against loans.
  • BTC barely moved near $78,737 on the news, a sign of thin demand rather than underlying strength.

Canaan revenue fell 68% while its Bitcoin treasury hit records, even as more than half those coins sit pledged against loans. So is this conviction, or collateral risk?

Canaan just reported one of its worst quarters on record. Q2 2026 revenue landed at $31.9 million. That is down 68% year over year. It also missed the company's own guidance of $35 million to $45 million.

The net loss ran to $97.6 million. Per-share loss widened to $0.13, from $0.03 a year earlier. Total revenue fell 68.2% from $100.2 million in the same quarter of 2025. Products revenue, the machines it sells to miners, dropped 81.1% to $13.6 million.

When your core product line falls by four fifths, the problem is demand, not accounting.

Yet Canaan leaned harder into holding Bitcoin. It produced 243 bitcoins in the quarter. Its treasury now sits near 1,915.5 BTC and 3,951.7 ETH. The company pushed those holdings to record levels back in February.

The catch is leverage. Canaan has pledged more than half of its Bitcoin against loans. So a treasury that reads like conviction also reads like collateral. That is the tension this report exposes.

Mining economics buckle under a falling price

Canaan's numbers are a signal about the whole mining economy. Miners sell machines and mine coins. Both revenue streams depend on a healthy Bitcoin price and confident buyers. When one manufacturer's product sales fall 81.1%, it means miners have stopped ordering new rigs.

That reluctance points to tightening liquidity across the sector. Capital spending is the first thing under pressure when margins thin. Miners defer upgrades, hoard cash, and wait. Equipment makers like Canaan feel that freeze first, and feel it hardest.

The macro backdrop makes it worse. Higher funding costs squeeze capital-heavy businesses. A mining firm carrying leveraged Bitcoin is exactly that kind of business. Pledged coins turn a soft market into a solvency question.

Stress at the equipment layer rarely stays contained.

Here is the transmission to price. Stressed miners have two levers. They can sell mined coins to raise cash, or they can sell pledged coins if loans get called. Either path adds supply. In a market with little fresh demand, extra supply does the damage on its own.

Pledged coins raise a supply question for BTC

The first-order effect on BTC is supply risk, not a headline crash. Canaan alone will not move the tape. But it is a proxy for dozens of miners in the same position, and that is what matters for liquidity.

Watch how thin the reaction was. This is grim news from a real sector player. BTC still sat near $78,737, up just 0.1% on the day. In a healthy market, weak fundamentals from a key operator would sting. Here the tape barely noticed.

A market that ignores bad news is often a market with no buyers left to scare.

For ETH, the read is indirect. Canaan holds 3,951.7 ETH inside that pledged treasury. If collateral gets liquidated, ETH wears part of the sell-side. Ether tends to follow BTC lower with a higher beta, so any forced selling amplifies down the risk curve.

Alts sit at the end of the cascade. They need surplus liquidity to bid, and this report describes the opposite. Capital is leaving the sector, not rotating within it. When the equipment layer is starved, the speculative tail is usually last to get funded and first to bleed.

Miner selling versus a quiet, unbothered tape

The cleanest confirmation is on-chain miner flow. If miner wallets start moving coins to exchanges, the supply thesis goes live. Rising exchange inflows from mining pools would tell you the pressure is real, not theoretical.

Watch the loan side too. Canaan has pledged over half its Bitcoin. A falling price raises the odds of margin calls on that collateral. If BTC grinds lower, forced selling becomes a mechanical risk, not a choice.

Invalidation looks different. A sharp reclaim of lost support, on rising spot volume, would say buyers stepped in to absorb the supply. Building open interest, OI (the total value of open derivatives contracts), on longs into a bounce would add weight to that case.

Until then, the burden of proof sits with the bulls.

The subtle tell is reaction speed. If more sector bad news keeps landing with no follow-through selling, downside may already be priced. But if each negative print drags price to fresh local lows, distribution is still working through the market. That distinction decides whether this is a bottoming grind or another leg down.

Why a weak miner print fits the distribution read

Canaan's report reads to the ParadiseTeam as a fundamental that fits an already bearish structure, not one that creates it. On higher timeframes our bias stays down, with one more flush to new local lows expected before any durable turn. This news supplies a mechanism for that flush.

BTC was trading near $78,737 as of the latest 24-hour mark, having lost the $79,000 level we flagged as key. The line in the sand now is $77,700, the current retest and next real support. A clean reclaim of $77,700 from below would force us to respect a bounce. Losing it opens $77,000, then the far bigger $58,000 zone we expect to break.

Smart money has done its work. Spot CVD, cumulative volume delta (net buying versus selling), shows accumulation near $61,000 already distributed with almost no price reward. Whales confirmed it with large sell orders. Fundamentals like this tend to land after the smart selling is finished, not before.

Retail is not the buyer here. Participation sits near record lows.

So we treat weak-hand supply from stressed miners as fuel for a move already in motion. Confirmation is a breakdown into five clear waves down. Invalidation is that $77,700 reclaim on volume. Probabilities favor the downside, but we size for being wrong.
