Trader back with 40x Bitcoin short after $38M in losses

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: BTC was trading near $76,725, down about 1.8% on the day, as a serial-liquidated trader reopened a 40x Bitcoin short with liquidation at $77,435. One account, not a catalyst.

  • AguilaTrades reopened a 40x Bitcoin short worth $7.19M after over $38M in prior losses
  • The position's liquidation price sits at $77,435, barely above BTC near $76,725
  • The last 24 hours flushed roughly $1.54B in crypto, about $1.28B of it longs

A trader who already lost over $38 million to liquidations just opened a fresh 40x Bitcoin short, with his wipeout price only a few hundred dollars above spot. Reckless, or a tell?

A familiar name reappeared on the order book this week. AguilaTrades, an account that has bled over $38 million to repeated liquidations, opened a new 40x Bitcoin short. The size is 93.67 BTC, roughly $7.19 million notional. The stated liquidation price is $77,435.21.

That number is the whole story. BTC was trading near $76,725 as of the latest read. His undoing sits barely $700 above spot.

So a serial-liquidated account has placed another high-leverage bet with almost no room to breathe. A one percent move the wrong way erases it. We have watched this particular film before, and it rarely ends with the credits rolling in his favour.

The backdrop is not calm, either. The last 24 hours saw roughly $1.54 billion in crypto liquidations, about $1.28 billion of it longs. The market is already purging leverage. Into that purge, one more 40x position arrives, fragile and loud.

This is not a positioning signal from large capital. It is one account, one bet, pinned near spot. We flag it because it is a repeat offender, not because it tells us anything new about where the real money sits.

Treat it as a case study. It shows, in real time, how fast an overleveraged bet collapses into a round-trip liquidation. It does not show you the market's next direction.

The math behind a 40x leverage bet

40x leverage is the real subject here, not the direction of the trade. At forty times, a small adverse move erases the entire position. His liquidation line proves it: $77,435, only fractions above the current print. The margin for error is almost theatrical.

This is how leverage transmits into price. When a crowded leverage band gets touched, exchanges force-close positions at market. That flow pushes price further into the next cluster of stops. One liquidation feeds the next. The cascade is mechanical, not emotional.

We just watched it at scale. Roughly $1.54 billion liquidated in a single day, $1.28 billion of it longs. Longs got flushed as price slipped lower. Now a fresh short sits with its own trigger hanging just overhead.

The irony writes itself. A trader who lost $38 million to this exact mechanism has handed the market one more level to hunt.

For the wider tape, one account changes nothing fundamental. But it is a useful reminder of how the plumbing works. Leverage does not create trends. It accelerates them, then punishes whoever arrived late and sized too big. The transmission runs from positioning to forced flow to volatility, over and over, cycle after cycle.

Where this short sits in the liquidation map

Read on its own facts, this short is noise, not a driver. BTC was near $76,725 as of the latest read, down about 1.8% on the day. One $7.19 million position does not move a trillion-dollar asset.

What it does add is a small magnet. His liquidation at $77,435 is now a known level. If price grinds up into it, his forced buy-back adds a few hundred BTC of mechanical demand. That is a short-term squeeze, not a trend change.

The cascade logic flows the usual way. BTC sets the tone. A sharp BTC move spills into ETH, then into the higher-beta alts that travel further on less. In a risk-off tape, alts fall faster and bounce harder.

But nothing here rewires that chain. The heavy liquidations and the ETF outflows we covered separately are the genuine weight on the tape. This trade is a passenger, not the engine.

So we file it as colour, not catalyst. It tells you leverage is still hot right near spot. It does not tell you where the next leg goes.

The trip wire just above spot

The level to mark is $77,435. That is his liquidation trigger, barely above spot. If BTC pushes through it, expect a brief pop as his short is force-closed, then a fade once the fuel is spent. A squeeze is not a breakout.

Confirmation of genuine strength looks different. It needs BTC to reclaim the former support zone near $79,000 and hold it as support, not merely tag it. A single wick through a liquidation level is a liquidity grab, nothing more.

Invalidation of any upside is simpler. If BTC rejects at that $79,000 band and rolls back under $76,725, sellers stay in control and this short, briefly, looks clever. Even a stopped clock is right twice.

Watch the longs too. With $1.28 billion already flushed, funding and open interest (OI) tell you whether leverage is resetting or rebuilding. A cooler, de-leveraged tape is healthier than one stacking fresh 40x bets.

Above all, separate the trader from the trend. His fate settles within a few hundred dollars either way. The market's real direction settles at $79,000 and beyond.

Where the real positioning actually sits

The ParadiseTeam treats this the way our lens treats every headline: as weather over structure. Simon de-risked Bitcoin long ago, trimming since $121,000 and distributing into the $79,000 to $87,000 zone. One retail-style 40x short near spot does not redraw that map.

Note who already moved. The tracked whale Keel closed his Bitcoin long right before the Binance hack and has since flipped short. That is positioning done ahead of the news, quietly. AguilaTrades is doing the opposite: a loud, fragile bet placed after the move.

The contrast is the lesson. Smart money repositions early and sizes to survive. Retail chases the headline and leverages to the brink. The $77,435 liquidation line is simply the price of that difference.

On levels, our read stays neutral-to-cautious. BTC near $76,725 sits below the former support around $79,000 that we now treat as resistance. Reclaim and hold it, and the odds of a push toward the first-wave top improve. Lose the lows first, and his short pays out for reasons that have nothing to do with skill.

So we watch the structure, not the gossip. The 0.618 Fibonacci retracement reclaim remains the real trigger for price discovery mode. Everything else, this short included, is just weather.
