Hearing Postponed as Famous Crypto Couple Continues Negotiating Plea Deal

The department deemed the seizure, which came to around $3.6 billion, as the largest financial seizure ever. $4.5 billion in cryptocurrency was allegedly laundered by the couple. Apart from the money-laundering charges, the couple is also accused of initiating 2,000 unauthorized transactions.

Lichtenstein and Morgan’s hearing was to be in Washington on Friday, 03 June 2022. However, the federal court appearance has been pushed as the two continue to negotiate a possible plea deal. Moreover, there are over 1.1 gigabytes of evidence that prosecutors are still reviewing.

The news of the postponement was via a court filing by the federal prosecutors on Monday. The prosecutors are asking to reschedule the hearing until 02 August 2022. The court filing implied that the ongoing discussions of possible resolutions of the case were sine qua non of a short trial. The filing indicated a “need for the defendants to review the voluminous financial records” submitted by the government on the evidence needing review.

New York Couple Could Be Imprisoned for Up To 20 Years

The prosecution had previously communicated that the Speedy Trial Act would not affect the couple’s case. Instead, they are anticipating arriving at a possible plea deal. A grand jury has yet to issue an official charge against the Bitfinex hack money launderers.

Lichtenstein and Morgan could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison without the plea deal. The two were granted bonds but had to put their parents’ homes as security. According to Chief Judge Beryl Howell, the famous crypto couple could use their financial resources to flee. Additionally, Lichtenstein is proficient with fake identities.
