Mainnet Merge Potential Dates Disclosed
The transition of Ethereum from the proof of work to proof of stake consensus model has been delayed for years by the developers, however, the complete transition to Ethereum 2.0 is now close to becoming a reality after the final trial run as been successfully executed on the Goerli network earlier this week.
The potential date was disclosed following agreement among the core developers like Tim Beiko and Prysmatic Labs co-founder Terence Tsao in an Aug. 11 developer call that the transition will happen when the Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD) hits 58750000000000000000000.
This was confirmed in a Github post titled “Tentative mainnet TTD” which was committed to by Beiko on August 11.
According to the document circulated among the developers, the merge date could be 15, 16 or 20 of next month. However, the specified date could still be changed, but the completion of the testnet merge is a strong sign that the proof-of-stake transition could happen without any issue in September.
Also, there would be an upgrade that would be done before everything is set in motion, it is called the Bellatrix upgrade, which is currently scheduled to happen by September 6. The date between the upgrade and the mainnet merge will be 14 days. The days will be the length of time required for the network to reach the specific total terminal difficulty (TTD) which will however activate the merge.
Currently, there is a discussion among the developers on when they want the merge to happen, if the Bellatrix upgrade begins on September 6, the mainnet merge could happen by September 16, however, developers do not want it to happen on a weekend, therefore, they will meet to discuss again the dates and estimates next week during their All-Core Developers call.
