Tornado Cash Developer to be Detained for Another Three Months

Alexey Pertsev to be Held in Detention Till Next Year February

Citing a flight risk, the Netherlands court will be detaining Alexey Pertsev, the developer of Tornado Cash till February 20, next year.

Earlier this year, the crypto mixing tool was banned in the US by the US Treasury Department, alleging that the tool is used for money laundering, days after the ban, Alexey Pertsev was arrested in the Netherlands and since his arrest, he has been in detention in the country.

During the Tuesday court hearing, Martine Boerlage, a Dutch public prosecutor announced the money laundering allegation for the first time, and now, Pertsev has been accused of aiding money laundering through the crypto mixing tool Tornado cash code.

The prosecutor ignored the fact that the crypto mixing tool was a decentralized protocol, and Pertsev has no power to control what happens inthe tool, the prosecutor furthered by claiming that it was in fact one and the same as PepperSec, a company Pertsev worked for alongside fellow developers Roman Semenov and Roman Storm.

Pertsev’s lawyer Keith Cheng expressed his concerns outside the courtroom, and according to him, he’s “very disappointed” with the court’s ruling.

“It’s clear to us that these judges are not as familiar with the subject matter as they should be,” Cheng said. “At the moment, the case law regarding criminal activities is all about bitcoin mixers … It’s very important that the court understands that Tornado Cash is something different.”
