The news, revealed by Deputy Finance Minister Maurizio Leo at an October 16 conference, has left crypto users wondering if it’s time to pack their bags and head for sunnier, tax-free shores.

Leo’s reasoning? As Bitcoin and crypto become more popular, it’s only fair that the taxman grabs a bigger slice of the pie. But a 42% slice? That’s more like a gaping chasm.

Crypto Exodus Incoming?

Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino wasn’t about to sit quietly on the sidelines. In true crypto fashion, he fired back with a meme, hinting that Italy’s move could spark an exodus of Bitcoin holders to more welcoming locales, hello, Dubai! He later added, in a masterclass of sarcasm, that Italy’s logic seemed to be: “The more successful a sector, the more we should tax it.”

With crypto users already eyeing jurisdictions like the UAE, which recently exempted crypto transactions from VAT, Italy might find itself on the losing end of this tax-heavy strategy. After all, how many Italians will stick around to watch their Bitcoin gains evaporate under this new regime? If history (and India’s tax debacle) is any guide, the answer may not be many.
