Vasil Hard Fork Upgrade To Happen by September 22

Cardano developer Input Output has announced that the Vasil hard fork upgrade has been scheduled to happen by September 22, a week after the Ethereum merge.

“Vasil is the most significant Cardano update to date, bringing increased network capacity and lower cost transactions,” Cardano developer Input Output tweeted Friday.

Vasil hard fork is when participants on a blockchain network decide to split the chain due to various reasons, this will lead to a different version of the same network, and is meant to improve Cardano scaling capabilities and reduce the cost of transactions.

The Vasil hard fork upgrade had earlier been scheduled for a June release on a test network. A hard fork is a backward-incompatible change to the software used to validate and produce new blocks.

For quite a while, the rollout has been delayed due to many reasons, a tweet on Friday by IOG however says that the upgrade had  met “the successful completion & extensive testing of all core components, plus confirmed community readiness.”

With the Vasil upgrade, Cardano hopes to contend with Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap.

Furthermore, Cardano founder who is also a co-founder of Ethereum Charles Hoskinson expressed his thoughts on the date of the Vasil upgrade.

“What’s so amazing about that date is it randomly and just so happenly [sic] falls on the independence day of Bulgaria,”  said Hoskinson.

Meanwhile, the hard fork is named after Hoskinson’s late Bulgarian community member, Vasil St. Dabov a former Chief Blockchain Advisor at software R&D firm Quanterall.
