Bitcoin breaks below $76K as equity rout spills over

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: Bitcoin broke below $76,000 Thursday as a sharp equity selloff dragged risk assets lower. BTC was trading near $75,932 as liquidations topped a billion dollars.

  • BTC fell below $76,000, erasing the post-election bounce above $80,000
  • Over $1B in leveraged positions liquidated; spot ETFs shed roughly $430M
  • Price clawed back toward $77,600 after testing sub-$76,000 lows

Bitcoin breaks below $76K in hours as a four-sigma stock rout drains liquidity from every risk asset. Was this crypto's own story, or someone else's?

Bitcoin fell below $76,000 on Thursday. The drop ran roughly five to six percent intraday. It wiped the post-election bounce that had carried price back above $80,000 only a day earlier.

This was not a crypto story. A sharp, AI-led equity selloff reversed the prior session's stock rally. Crypto moved as a high-beta risk asset inside that rout, not in response to anything it did itself.

The mechanics were brutal and fast. Over a billion dollars in leveraged positions liquidated as price slid. Spot Bitcoin ETFs bled roughly $430 million in net outflows, pulling a steady bid out of the market exactly when liquidity was thinning.

Crypto-linked equities took the same beating, down double digits in the session. Major alts followed. NEAR, BCH, HYPE and XLM all posted double-digit weekly losses alongside the BTC decline.

Then came the tell. Price touched the low $75,000s, roughly $75,400 to $75,700, and did not stay there. It clawed back toward $77,600 in the same session. So $76,000 did not just break. It got tested and defended inside a few hours, which matters more than the headline number.

By our tracking, BTC was trading near $75,932 as the dust settled, barely changed on the day after the round trip. The post-midterm euphoria lasted about as long as most post-election euphoria does.

Equity rout pulled every risk asset lower

The driver here sits outside crypto entirely. A four-sigma equity reversal, led by an AI-stock unwind, erased the prior day's post-election gains across markets. When stocks sell off that hard, correlated risk assets rarely escape.

Bitcoin is still priced as high-beta risk. In a genuine risk-off flush, it tends to fall further and faster than equities, because its liquidity is thinner and its leverage runs hotter. That is precisely what played out.

Two drains hit at once. Spot ETF outflows of roughly $430 million removed a passive, steady bid. At the same time, over a billion dollars in leveraged longs were force-closed into a falling market.

Forced selling feeds on itself. Each liquidation pushes price into the next cluster of stops, which triggers more selling, which drains more liquidity. The move accelerates not because new information arrives, but because positioning unwinds.

That is the structural point for traders. This break was a liquidity event, not a repricing of Bitcoin's fundamentals. Nothing about the network, adoption, or policy changed between $80,000 and $76,000.

The macro read is clean. Crypto did not lead this. It followed equities down as the weakest, most leveraged link in the risk chain, and the ETF outflow simply widened the gap on the way down.

Liquidations and outflows hit BTC, then alts

BTC absorbed the first blow. Breaking $76,000 flushed the longs stacked just beneath it, and price printed into the low $75,000s before buyers appeared.

The liquidation figure tells the story of who got hurt. Between one billion and 1.3 billion dollars in leveraged positions closed, overwhelmingly longs. That is the signature of over-levered traders and passive ETF flows capitulating together, not an orderly rotation.

ETH and the broader alt complex fared worse, as they usually do when liquidity drains. High-beta names fall hardest when the bid thins. NEAR, BCH, HYPE and XLM all logged double-digit weekly losses, and crypto-linked equities dropped double digits in the single session. This is the cascade in its textbook form. Risk-off macro hits BTC first, BTC drags ETH, and ETH drags the long tail of alts where exits are narrowest and panic is loudest.

The partial recovery toward $77,600 does not erase the damage. It shows where the first real bid sat.

On our read this story leans bearish for crypto near term. A forced-selling event plus ETF outflows signals active deleveraging and distribution, not quiet accumulation. Until the outflows stop and leverage resets, every bounce faces supply from positions still underwater and looking to get out closer to flat.

Whether $76,000 holds as a floor

The level to watch is $76,000. Price broke it, tested the low $75,000s, then reclaimed it toward $77,600 in the same session. That round trip is the single most informative thing in this move.

Confirmation of a floor would look specific. We want $76,000 to hold on a retest with declining sell volume, ETF flows turning from outflow back toward neutral or inflow, and funding cooling after the liquidation purge.

Invalidation is just as clear. A clean break back below the session lows near $75,400, especially with fresh outflows and rising volume, would say the defense failed and sellers are still in control.

Watch the equity tape too, because that is the actual driver. If stocks stabilise after the four-sigma shock, crypto gets room to breathe. If the AI-led selling resumes, Bitcoin has no reason to decouple from it.

Leverage is the other dial. After a billion-dollar flush, open interest should reset lower. If it rebuilds fast on longs while price stalls, the market is simply reloading the same trade that just blew up.

The honest framing is this. One intraday defense of $76,000 is a data point, not a bottom. We need it to hold a second and third time before calling it support rather than a level on its way to being lost.

Reading the bounce off sub-$76K lows

BTC was trading near $75,932 as of the round trip, right on the line the ParadiseTeam has flagged as the hinge. Our standing lens marks $76,000 as the top of wave one and a structural invalidation level, so this test was never going to be quiet.

The near-term picture is a tug-of-war. Whales have been net buyers into this dip, absorbing sell pressure tactically, while over-levered retail longs got flushed in the liquidation wave. The sub-$76,000 defense back toward $77,600 fits that absorption read, but it is tentative, not confirmed.

We hold a bearish verdict on this specific event. Forced selling and $430 million of ETF outflows are deleveraging, not accumulation, and strength from here likely meets supply. That said, our broader lens keeps a short-squeeze risk live. The liquidation map still shows a heavy cluster near $81,700 to $82,500 above, versus a thinner pocket near $70,000 to $71,000 below.

So the tactical path can squeeze up before the dominant structure reasserts. A reclaim and hold above $77,600 on fading sell volume would open room toward that $82K cluster as a relief move, not a trend change.

Lose $76,000 cleanly and the $70,000 to $71,000 zone becomes the magnet. The ParadiseTeam treats any bounce here as short-covering to respect, with the medium-term bias still lower until price proves otherwise.
