TeraWulf mining revenue drops 69% as AI leasing dominates

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: TeraWulf's bitcoin mining revenue fell about 69% in Q3, yet total revenue hit a record on AI leasing. BTC traded near $75,694, down roughly 5%, barely reacting.

  • TeraWulf's Q3 bitcoin mining revenue fell about 69% to $13.2 million year over year
  • HPC leasing drove 83% of revenue, anchored by a 20-year, roughly $19 billion Anthropic lease
  • The pivot decouples miner equities from spot BTC rather than moving bitcoin itself

TeraWulf just watched its bitcoin mining revenue fall 69% in a single quarter. Yet the company earned more than ever before. So has this bitcoin miner quietly become something else?

TeraWulf reported a strange quarter. Its bitcoin mining revenue fell about 69% year over year, down to $13.2 million from $43.4 million. On paper, that looks like a miner in real trouble.

It is not. The same quarter brought total revenue of $76.2 million, a record. The difference came from one line that barely existed before: leasing out computing power.

High-performance computing (HPC) leases brought in roughly $63 million. That is 83% of everything TeraWulf earned in the quarter. The miner now makes most of its money renting infrastructure to AI, not mining coins.

Behind the number sits a landmark deal. TeraWulf signed a 20-year lease with Anthropic for about 401 megawatts of capacity, worth around $19 billion in contracted revenue. One contract now dwarfs years of mining output.

The balance sheet shifted too. TeraWulf sold its 50.1% majority stake in the Abernathy joint venture, booking a $95 million gain. It closed the quarter holding roughly $2.4 billion in cash and restricted cash. So the 69% headline is real, but it is the wrong story. This is a company deliberately turning its power and its racks toward higher-margin, long-duration AI contracts.

And TeraWulf is not alone. Core Scientific, Iren, Hut 8 and Applied Digital are all chasing similar multi-year AI leasing deals. The bitcoin-miner-to-AI-landlord trade is becoming a sector, not a one-off.

Mining margins lose to compute demand

The transmission here runs through where mining capital now flows, not through bitcoin's own supply or demand.

Pure bitcoin mining lives or dies on margin. Block rewards, difficulty, energy costs and the BTC price all squeeze the same thin spread. When the coin falls, as it did about 5% in the last 24 hours, that margin gets thinner fast.

AI compute demand does not care where bitcoin trades. A 20-year lease pays the same whether BTC sits at $75,000 or $100,000. That is the whole appeal. So miners are reallocating the one asset they truly control: cheap, contracted power. Every megawatt pointed at an AI tenant is a megawatt no longer exposed to the next bitcoin drawdown.

For the company, this lowers balance-sheet sensitivity to BTC swings. Contracted cash flow replaces volatile mining income. The roughly $19 billion Anthropic deal is, in effect, two decades of guaranteed rent.

Here is the quiet irony. Firms built to bet on bitcoin's price are busy insulating themselves from it. The press release still says miner. The income statement increasingly says landlord.

That matters for how you read the sector. Mining equities used to trade as a leveraged bet on BTC. Now they trade on AI contract pipelines and data-center economics instead. The link between a miner's stock and the coin it mines is loosening, and for traders, that decoupling is the real signal buried under a scary percentage.

Miner stocks drift from spot bitcoin

Start with the direct market effect: almost none. This is company news, not a bitcoin catalyst.

TeraWulf's mining cut does not remove a single coin of demand or add one of supply. Its hash power shifting to AI is marginal against the whole network. BTC did not move on the release; the 1-hour change was essentially flat.

The weak tape today is a separate story. Bitcoin was trading near $75,694, down about 5% on the day, driven by broader risk-off flows rather than by one miner's earnings. So the first-order read on spot is neutral. Nothing here forces BTC higher or lower.

ETH sees even less. There is no mining-reward link for Ethereum, and AI leasing does not touch it at all. Alts sit a further step removed again.

Where the impact lands is in equities. Miner stocks and neocloud names are the ones repricing. Some AI-linked equities are reportedly under pressure in the current selloff, and miners pivoting into that same trade inherit that volatility. That is the cascade worth watching: not BTC to ETH to alts, but mining shares drifting away from the coin entirely. A trader long a miner for bitcoin exposure may now be long an AI landlord instead.

The capital rotation is sector-wide. It reshapes who owns what, without touching bitcoin's own order book.

Which contracts anchor the next quarters

The revenue mix next quarter tells you most. If HPC climbs past 83%, the pivot is accelerating. If mining recovers share, the shift was overstated.

The clearest confirmation is more contracts. TeraWulf reaffirmed a 250 to 500 megawatt annual capacity growth target. Watch whether new megawatts go to AI tenants or back to mining rigs.

The sector tells the real story. Hut 8 already signed about $7 billion over 15 years with Anthropic and Fluidstack. Applied Digital carries roughly $11 billion in leases. TeraWulf's own HPC pipeline runs near $12.8 billion with Fluidstack and Core42.

If those pipelines keep growing, the bitcoin-miner label fades across the board. That is confirmation of a structural rotation.

Invalidation looks different. A wave of AI contract cancellations, or tenants failing to fund buildouts, would strand that capacity. Then miners might swing power back to BTC quickly.

Watch the health of the customers too. A 20-year lease is only as good as the tenant paying it. Contracted revenue assumes the counterparty survives two decades, which is a long time in technology.

Keep an eye on the cash. TeraWulf's roughly $2.4 billion position funds the buildout. If that burns faster than contracts mature, the strategy tightens.

For spot bitcoin, watch nothing here. The signal lives in the stocks, the leases and the power allocation, not in the order book.

Why 69% does not read as bearish BTC

The ParadiseTeam reads this as equity news that barely touches our bitcoin map. BTC was trading near $75,694 as of the live tape, and that level matters far more than any single miner's quarter.

Our standing structure sits right here. Key support is $76,000, the invalidation level we track, and price is testing it now. A 69% mining-revenue drop does not move that line one inch.

So we separate the two cleanly. The TeraWulf story is about balance sheets. The $76,000 fight is about who absorbs the selling.

On that fight, whales have been net buyers into the dip over the past 24 hours, using retail fear as liquidity. Fear readings sit near 20. That is the backdrop, not this earnings release.

If $76,000 holds, the path of least resistance still points up toward the $81,700 to $82,500 liquidation cluster, where around $2.2 billion in shorts sit exposed. Any squeeze there is a relief move, not a trend change.

Lose $76,000 with conviction, and the $70,000 to $71,000 region comes into play, then our dominant bearish thesis toward $44,000 reasserts.

For miner equities, treat strength with caution. AI contract euphoria can meet selling the way any crowded trade does. We see this as diversification for TeraWulf, and a decoupling signal for traders, not a reason to change the BTC plan.
