Ethereum staking hits record 43.8M ETH as supply locks up

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: Ethereum staking just hit a record 43.8 million ETH, about a third of all supply, as BitMine keeps buying. BTC traded near $81,322 and ETH near $2,385, both down on the day, yet the locked float keeps growing.

  • Ethereum staking set a record 43.8M ETH, roughly 35.9% of total supply, a sixth straight quarter of growth.
  • BitMine added 12,535 ETH in a week, lifting holdings to 6,041,481 ETH, near 4.9% of supply, with 5.07M staked.
  • Participants kept locking coins up even as ETH prices fell and staking APR slid to 2.56%.

Ethereum staking just hit a record 43.8M ETH, about 35.9% of supply, even as prices and yields fell all year. So what are these stakers seeing that the price chart is not?

Ethereum staking just set a fresh record. The Q4 2026 numbers put the locked total at 43.8 million ETH, roughly 35.9% of all supply. That marks the sixth straight quarter of growth.

The climb has not stopped since. As of October 19, 43,943,968 ETH sat staked on the network, about 35.20% of the total. Two weeks earlier the figure was near 43.7 million. The direction is hard to miss.

Institutions are doing much of the heavy lifting. BitMine added 12,535 ETH over the past week alone. Its holdings now reach 6,041,481 ETH, close to 4.9% of Ethereum's 122.1 million supply. Of that, 5.07 million ETH is staked and earning yield.

Here is the quiet part. All of this happened while ETH prices fell and staking rewards shrank through 2026. The APR (annual percentage rate) now holds at just 2.56%.

So participants kept locking coins up as the reward for doing so dropped. That is not the behaviour of a crowd chasing easy income. It reads as conviction, or at least patience.

We have no single same-day catalyst here. This is our reading of a slow structural shift, not a confirmed trigger. We would rather say that plainly than dress it up.

The structural point is simple. Staked ETH is ETH taken off the market. More locked supply means less floating supply left to sell. ETH traded near $2,385 as this printed, down on the day, while the free float kept thinning underneath it.

Locked ETH supply against a falling price

Supply is the whole story here. When 35.9% of ETH sits staked, roughly a third of the asset leaves daily trading. That withdrawn float keeps growing each quarter, and it does not come back quickly.

The macro mechanism runs through scarcity. Price is set at the margin, by the coins actually available to buy and sell. Record Ethereum staking shrinks that available pile while demand holds.

That matters more because of who is staking. BitMine alone holds over 6 million ETH and stakes 5.07 million of it. These are not hands that panic sell on a red day.

Now weigh the yield. An APR of 2.56% is modest, lower than it was. People still chose to lock coins up for it anyway.

That is the tell. When participants accept a smaller reward to hold a shrinking float, they are pricing in something beyond this quarter's yield. They are pricing in the coin itself.

Falling prices alongside rising staking is a divergence, not a contradiction. The chart shows what retail did this year. The staking total shows what longer-term holders kept doing underneath.

For traders, the lesson is to separate the two clocks. Price moves on sentiment and leverage in days. Supply structure moves on conviction over quarters, and it is the slower clock that tends to win in the end.

Thinner ETH float ripples into BTC

Start with the direct effect. A shrinking tradable ETH float makes the market thinner, which cuts both ways. Thin markets fall fast on fear, but they also rebound hard when demand returns.

Right now fear owns the tape. ETH sat near $2,385, down 1.2% on the day. The record staking total did nothing to stop the slide, because supply structure is a slow force, not a same-day bid.

Bitcoin frames the mood for everyone. BTC traded near $81,322, also down 1.2%, and ETH is still largely a high-beta follower of BTC. Until Bitcoin steadies, ETH strength tends to stay a story about fundamentals rather than price.

The liquidity chain is familiar. BTC sets risk appetite first. ETH moves next, usually with more range. Smaller alts, including SOL near $104, amplify whatever ETH does.

So a tighter ETH float does not fire today. It loads the spring. When risk appetite turns, less floating supply means buyers chase fewer coins, and the move can be sharper than the thin volume suggests. That is the bullish case this story actually supports. Not a promise of a bounce, but a setup where supply is quietly leaving while demand from large holders stays.

The near-term risk is honest and real. If BTC breaks lower, ETH follows regardless of how much is staked. Structure helps on the recovery, not during the flush.

Signals that would confirm the squeeze

Watch the staking total first. If it keeps climbing past 44 million ETH into a weak tape, the conviction story strengthens. A sudden drop in staked supply would weaken it instead.

Follow the institutional buyers next. More BitMine accumulation on red days would confirm large holders are absorbing retail selling. A pause or a sale would be the first crack.

Keep an eye on the APR. Yield near 2.56% is low, so a further fall could eventually slow new staking. For now, flows are still growing despite it.

Then there is the obvious anchor: Bitcoin. ETH cannot decouple far while BTC trades heavy. A BTC stabilisation would let the ETH supply story finally show up in price.

Confirmation, for us, looks like steady or rising staking, continued large-holder buying, and ETH holding its ground on days BTC merely wobbles. That combination says the float is tightening into firm hands.

Invalidation looks different. A real exploit or a large unstaking wave would put coins back on the market fast. That would flip the scarcity argument on its head.

Treat the price dip as background, not as the verdict. The data we can verify, staking totals and holdings, still points up. The weak price is the part the crowd can see, and the crowd is not always early. So watch the slow numbers, not the hourly candle. They are telling the more durable story.

Reading the staking surge through positioning

The ParadiseTeam reads record Ethereum staking as slow accumulation, not a timing signal. Supply is leaving the market while large holders keep buying. That is background strength, and it rarely moves price on the same day.

Price still answers to Bitcoin. BTC traded near $81,322 as this printed, inside the structure we have been tracking. Our standing bias stays constructive while the $78,000 to $79,800 support zone holds.

In that view, a dip toward $79,000 would flush overleveraged longs before any push higher. Spot buying making higher lows suggests larger players are absorbing that selling, which rhymes with what the ETH staking data shows.

The upside map is unchanged. Reclaiming and defending the neutral zone keeps $85,000 and then $90,000 in play, where crowded shorts sit. ETH tends to follow once BTC confirms.

Here is the connection to this story. A thinner ETH float means that when risk appetite returns, there is less supply to meet it. The staking record is the fuel, not the match.

We stay honest about the two-sided risk. Strength in the data does not stop a sharp BTC break from dragging ETH down with it. Structure helps the recovery, not the flush.

So we treat staked-ETH strength as a reason to respect the downside less over time, not a reason to ignore it now. Levels first, conviction second. The float is tightening, and patient positioning tends to outlast the hourly noise.
