Developing story update (November 06, 2026, 12:11 UTC):
China's Central Bank launches investigation into Solana SOL over cryptocurrency advertising in Shanghai.
Market briefing: China's central bank has halted Solana's advertising push in Shanghai and opened an investigation into everyone involved. SOL slid near $90 as BTC traded around $76,123, down 5.2% on the day.
- A PBOC official confirmed Solana advertised on Citigroup Tower in Lujiazui through a domestic entity, which China treats as banned virtual currency marketing
- Regulators halted the campaign, suspended Solana's offline Shanghai event, and are now investigating the entities and individuals involved
- SOL fell 6.9% over 24 hours to near $90.07 with only a 0.49% hourly uptick, so this read as selling, not dip buying
China just halted Solana's advertising campaign in Shanghai's financial heart and opened an investigation into everyone involved. So what does a regulator with a kill switch reach for next?
A People's Bank of China official has confirmed what regulators found in Shanghai. Solana had placed advertising on the exterior wall of Citigroup Tower, in the heart of the Lujiazui financial district, through a domestic entity. In China's eyes, that is virtual currency marketing. And virtual currency marketing is not allowed.
So the authorities moved fast.
The PBOC worked with local financial regulators, public security, and market supervision bodies to halt the campaign. Solana's offline promotional event in the city was suspended. The investigation now reaches for the entities and the individuals behind it.
This is not a surprise to anyone who has watched China enforce the same rules for years. The surprise, if there is one, is that a major project thought a billboard on a Lujiazui landmark would go unnoticed. It did not.
The timing lands badly. Solana's advertising campaign became a headline on a day the whole market was already heavy. SOL was trading near $90.07, down 6.9% over 24 hours, with only a marginal uptick on the hourly to show for it.
Nothing here touches the Solana network itself. The chain runs as it always did. What changed is a reminder, delivered plainly, that visibility in the wrong jurisdiction carries a cost. Traders read the word investigation and sold first. The questions, as usual, came later.
China's kill switch for crypto marketing
China does not negotiate on crypto marketing. The PBOC moving against Solana's Shanghai campaign is not new policy. It is the same hardline posture reasserting itself the moment a major project became visible on Chinese soil.
That matters for one reason. China is the recurring proof that a whole market can be switched off locally. Every large-cap alt with Asian ambitions now carries a little more regulatory risk premium, because the message is plain. Visible promotion invites enforcement.
The transmission runs from headline to appetite. When a regulator opens an investigation into entities and individuals, partners and marketers in the region pull back. Deals get quieter. Sponsorships get cautious. That cools one channel of demand that alts lean on for reach.
It also feeds the broader risk mood. This landed inside a news cycle already thick with hacks, outflows, and liquidations. One more enforcement headline does not break the market. But it stacks onto a pile that keeps buyers defensive and sellers quick.
None of this touches Solana's code or its chain. The network runs exactly as it did yesterday. What changed is the perceived cost of operating loudly in a jurisdiction that has made its rules clear for years. Traders price perception first and fundamentals later.
Why SOL took the hit first
SOL wore the headline. It was down 6.9% over 24 hours, trading near $90.07, while the only green on the chart was a marginal 0.49% uptick on the hourly. That is not dip buying. That is a brief pause in selling.
Read the structure honestly. A real regulatory headline landed, retail sold, and nothing in the flow suggests smart money stepped in to absorb it on this specific news. Bad news treated as bad news.
BTC set the weather anyway. It was trading near $76,123 as of 10:15 UTC, down 5.2% on the day, so alts had no risk-on tailwind to lean on. When the majors bleed, a China enforcement story gives Solana holders one more reason to hit the bid.
The cascade is familiar. BTC leads, ETH follows, and high-beta large caps like SOL amplify the move. A name in the headlines falls faster than the index around it. That is exactly what played out here.
ETH and the wider alt complex did not get a clean readout from this event alone. The data shows no broad contagion from Solana's Shanghai problem. This reads as name-specific pressure stacked on a weak tape, not a market-wide trigger.
So the honest summary is narrow. One alt, one jurisdiction, one enforcement action, into a market already nervous. The selling was quick and the questions came later.
Whether the probe reaches past Solana
The investigation is the live variable. The PBOC said it will pursue the entities and individuals behind the campaign, so scope is what matters most. A narrow probe of one ad buyer is noise. A widening one is a trend.
Watch whether this stays about Solana. If other projects with Chinese marketing exposure quietly pull campaigns, the chill is spreading. Silence from the region would be its own signal.
On price, the confirmation is simple. If SOL keeps making lower lows on rising volume with no bounce, the market is still treating this as a reason to leave. That is the bearish path following through.
Invalidation looks different. A firm reclaim of lost ground on strong volume, holding through a retest, would say the headline has been absorbed and the panic sellers are done. We have not seen that yet.
Keep one eye on BTC the whole time. Solana does not decide its own fate while the majors are falling. A BTC stabilisation would give SOL room to breathe. A BTC breakdown drags it regardless of China.
Funding and open interest, which is OI (open interest), are the tell for traps. If shorts pile in on the headline while price refuses to make new lows, that crowd becomes fuel. Enforcement news is real, but an overcrowded short is still an overcrowded short.
Why this headline keeps a risk premium on SOL
The ParadiseTeam frames this as a name-specific hit landing on an already fragile tape, not a fresh market driver. BTC was trading near $76,123 as of 10:15 UTC, sitting right on the line that matters. That $76,000 level is the one to respect. In our lens it is the top of wave one and the invalidation line. Lose it with conviction and the dominant daily and weekly structure points lower, toward the $70,000 to $71,000 liquidation pocket first, and $44,000 as the longer target.
Here is the tension. Whales have been net buyers into this dip over the past 24 hours, absorbing sell pressure while retail fear sits near 20. Price refusing to break its prior low, despite heavy selling, hints at quiet accumulation under the surface.
So the Solana headline does not redraw the map. It adds weight to the bearish side while squeeze fuel stacks on the other. The liquidation cluster near $81,700 to $82,500 holds roughly 2.2 billion in shorts. That is the magnet if buyers defend here.
Our read stays two-sided and risk-first. This news is genuinely bearish for SOL and consistent with the broader caution. But a relief push toward $82,000 would be short covering, not a trend change, and over-leveraged shorts chasing the China story could get hunted first. We treat strength as relief, not reversal.

honestly the part i dont buy is the 6.9% slide being blamed on one probe. when a regulator halts an ad campaign, the first thing that moves is headlines, not the chain itself. my cousin already told me three times that solana is cooked, so i guess we'll see which one of us is right.
