Bitcoin absorbs hot CPI shock and $1B in liquidations

Listen: the breakdown

Market briefing: Bitcoin took hot CPI and PPI prints and nearly $1 billion in long liquidations, dipped to $79,789, then reclaimed its ground to trade near $81,352. The market got the bad news it feared and refused to panic.

  • Hot CPI and PPI prints sent Bitcoin below $80,000 to a low of $79,789.
  • Nearly $1 billion in crypto long positions were liquidated in the flush.
  • BTC defended the $80,000 to $81,500 zone and reclaimed the spot-ETF cost basis near $81,500.

Bitcoin took hot CPI, hot PPI, and nearly $1B in long liquidations, then refused to dump below $80,000. Is this bad news absorption a smart money tell?

Bitcoin spent the session collecting every bad headline the bears had asked for. Hotter than expected consumer price index (CPI) data landed first. Then producer price index (PPI) numbers came in hot too. Rate hike fears returned, and risk assets wobbled.

The price did what leveraged markets do under pressure. It fell below $80,000 and tagged a low of $79,789. Nearly $1 billion in crypto long positions were liquidated in the flush.

Then something unusual happened. Bitcoin refused to keep falling. It defended the $80,000 to $81,500 support zone, bounced back toward $82,000, and reclaimed the spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) cost basis near $81,500. As of this writing it traded around $81,352, down a modest 0.3% on the day.

That is the whole story in one line: the market got the bad news it feared and declined to panic. Hot inflation, a billion in liquidations, and still no cascade.

We want to be honest about what this is. There was no single confirmed catalyst that turned the tape. No surprise rate cut, no headline rescue. This is our read, not a reported cause.

What we see is absorption. Sellers hit the market with real fear, the stops below $80,000 got swept, and buyers stepped straight back in. The spot-ETF cost basis reclaimed as fast as it broke. Resilience into bad news is rarely an accident. It usually means positioning was already heavy on the short side, leaving fewer sellers and a thinner path lower. The question now is whether that bid holds.

Hot inflation and the liquidity squeeze

Inflation data is the macro driver here, and it points the wrong way for risk assets. The consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI) both came in hotter than expected. Hotter inflation revives the fear that rate cuts get delayed, which tightens the liquidity backdrop that crypto feeds on.

That transmission is the chain that matters. Higher-for-longer rates pull money toward yield and away from risk. Bitcoin, as the most liquid risk asset in crypto, usually feels that pull first and hardest.

So the backdrop was bearish by the textbook. Hot prints, delayed-cut fears, leveraged longs exposed above a round number. Everything lined up for a flush, and the flush duly arrived.

What matters is the reaction, not the data. Markets fall when bad news surprises a complacent crowd. They hold when the crowd already braced for it.

The muted damage suggests the bad news was largely priced in. Positioning looks to have been heavy short already, which is the condition under which fresh bearish headlines stop moving the tape. This is where our edge lives. When an asset absorbs the exact catalyst bears wanted and refuses to break, the balance of trapped traders has usually shifted. Fewer sellers remain, and the path of least resistance can quietly turn the other way.

Where the billion dollar flush landed

The cascade began exactly where the leverage sat. Longs stacked above $80,000 got liquidated as the price broke, and nearly $1 billion in positions were forced to close. That is the liquidity sellers needed to push lower.

But the sweep did not produce a slide. BTC reclaimed the $80,000 to $81,500 zone and pushed back toward $82,000 within the move. The spot-ETF cost basis near $81,500, broken on the flush, was taken back almost immediately.

When Bitcoin holds, the rest of the market exhales. ETH tends to follow BTC's lead on these macro flushes, so a BTC that refuses to break keeps ETH's own support intact rather than inviting a deeper test.

Altcoins are the amplifier. They fall harder than BTC when fear spreads and bounce harder when it fades. A BTC that absorbs a billion in liquidations without breaking removes the trigger that usually drags alts into a second leg down.

None of this guarantees an upside move. Absorption is a floor signal, not a launch signal. It tells us sellers struggled here, not that buyers will now chase every candle.

The read stays constructive while $80,000 holds. Lose it on volume and the liquidity picture changes fast.

Signals that confirm or break this bid

Confirmation starts with the $80,000 to $81,500 zone holding on a daily close. That band is now the line between absorption and a failed bounce. Each defended retest adds weight to the floor.

Volume tells the next part. We want to see any dip arrive on lower selling volume, a sign that the supply hitting the market is drying up. Heavy volume on a break the other way would invalidate the read.

Funding and open interest (OI, the total value of outstanding derivatives positions) matter here too. If longs rebuild aggressively into resistance, the squeeze risk flips back onto the upside shorts. If OI stays flat while price grinds higher, the move is healthier, spot-led buying.

Watch the spot-ETF cost basis near $81,500 as a tripwire. Holding above it keeps institutional buyers in profit on their average entry. Losing it again puts that cohort back underwater and invites more supply.

Invalidation is simple and worth respecting. A decisive daily close back below $79,789, the session low, on expanding volume says sellers were not exhausted after all. That reopens the path toward the lower supports.

Until then, the tape has made its statement. Bad news came, and the market declined to oblige the bears.

Exhausted sellers and the thinning path lower

The ParadiseTeam reads this as textbook absorption, with one caution attached. Bearish news hit real support, retail longs got flushed, and spot buyers stepped straight back in. That is the smart money pattern: sweep the stops below $80,000, take the liquidity, reclaim the level.

Our standing lens still frames the bigger picture as cautious. Crowded retail longs and bearish volume divergences point to short-term weakness before any clean continuation. Over $900 million in longs were liquidated recently, yet many positions reopened quickly, which keeps squeeze risk live in both directions.

So we hold two ideas at once. Short term, the $78,000 to $80,000 band is the support the bulls must keep. Strength from here can still meet selling into resistance near $84,000, and again toward the $90,000 target, where distribution has shown up before.

The levels we are watching: $80,000 as the near line in the sand, $78,000 as the deeper support, $84,000 as first resistance, $90,000 as the lens target. A swing invalidation sits down near $76,000.

For risk, absorption rewards patience, not chasing. A reclaim that holds offers a cleaner risk-to-reward (R:R) than buying the first green candle after a flush. Define the stop-loss (SL) below the swept low, size small, and let the level prove itself. Bad news absorbed is a tell, not a trade ticket.
