To evade economic sanctions, the North Korean government has been using cyberattacks on crypto firms to steal cryptocurrency.
In a Wednesday report by the United Nations, the North Korean government after stealing a record sum of cryptocurrency in 2022 may be sending military communications to Russia.
As per the report, roughly virtual assets worth $630 million to over $1 billion were stolen last year, more than double what was stolen by the same government in 2021.
The information was released by a panel set up by the UN, and according to the panel:
“The country used increasingly sophisticated cybertechniques both to gain access to digital networks involved in cyberfinance and to steal information of potential value, including to its weapons programs.”
Member countries were however implored to adopt guidelines from the anti-money laundering (AML) Financial Action Task Force to prevent the use of digital assets to purchase weapons which may be used for mass destruction.
Meanwhile, some hacker groups like the Lazarus Group have been linked to the North Korean government, a Group that was reported to be behind the attack on the $625 million Ronin Bridge hack.
Additionally, the UN reported an operation of HOlyGhOst, a hacker organization that is backed by the North Korean government and targets SMEs in order to steal money.
