Elon Musk Considering Building a New Social Media Platform

The internet and social media have become a vital tool for communication through which people from all walks of life can exercise their right of freedom of expression and exchange information and ideas. However, the popular Mogul, Elon Musk is becoming more critical of the social media platform, Twitter and its policies, claiming that the platform is undermining the fundamentals of democracy (freedom of speech and expression).

In response to his curiosity, the CEO of Tesla inc., is now ‘giving a serious thought’ about building a new social media platform where human rights can be more respected. “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.” Musk tweeted.

On march 25, he tweeted, “free speech is essential to a functioning democracy,” and he questioned if Twitter is actually adhering to this. Elon replying to a question whether he would be considering building a new social media platform with an open source algorithm, where free speech would be prioritized and propaganda would be minimized, he said, “Am giving a serious thought to this.”

The discussion began when Elon put a tweet in a Twitter poll asking his followers if they actually believe Twitter is adhering to the principle of free speech, which “is essential to a functioning democracy.” He tweeted that “the consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.” The poll ended after 24 hours, with 70.4% of about 2 million voters voted no.

What could have triggered this?

Last week, the US securities and exchange commission informed a judge that Elon’s tweets about Tesla would be a valid subject for government investigation even if the court decides to throw out its agreement with SEC in 2018. He is now seeking to end being watched closely by SEC, saying the agreement is used to “trample” his freedom of speech. Currently, He is asking the court to block a subpoena by the securities regulator for documents relating to the review of his tweets. Should Elon make the company public as he claimed on Twitter, the regulators will distribute funds from the company and Elon to investors who lost their money after buying Tesla shares, according to SEC settlement agreement.

Twitter was also accused of free speech violation by the former US President, Donald Trump, who launched his social app October last year.
