Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange has received the green light from the National Futures Association (NFA) to offer crypto futures trading to qualified US customers.

In an announcement made on August 16, Coinbase revealed its official authorization to run a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) platform, paving the way for the introduction of Bitcoin futures via its Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)-sanctioned derivatives exchange.

Coinbase emphasized the significance of this approval, stating, “This pivotal step underscores our dedication to maintaining a compliant and regulated operation, solidifying our position as the most secure and trusted crypto-centric platform for our clientele.”

However, the exchange’s futures trading feature won’t be immediately accessible to US users, as indicated on Coinbase’s dedicated futures webpage. The site mentions, “Regulated futures trading in the US is on the horizon. Register now to be on the priority list and gain early access.”

Coinbase highlighted the vast potential of the global crypto derivatives sector, noting it represents 75% of the global crypto trading volume. The company added, “Margin trading empowers users with leverage, allowing them to tap into the crypto market with a smaller initial investment compared to conventional spot trading.”

It’s worth noting that Coinbase had previously unveiled its intention to launch BTC and ETH futures for institutional traders in early June. Additionally, the firm had aspirations to debut a derivatives exchange in Bermuda as part of its broader international growth strategy.

This development emerges amidst Coinbase’s ongoing legal tussle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which accused the platform of contravening local securities regulations by offering unregistered securities earlier in June.
