This comes amidst the ongoing lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Binance, which has already been causing quite a stir in the crypto world.
The BNB bridge, a mechanism that facilitates the transfer of BNB tokens between different blockchain networks, was targeted by some crafty hackers. The attackers managed to exploit a vulnerability in the bridge, leading to the illegal issuance of 2 million BNB, valued at a staggering $566 million.
The plot thickens as the attackers didn’t just stop at stealing the BNB. They went on to use Venus, a popular lending protocol on the BNB chain, to borrow various stablecoins such as USDT, USDC, and BUSD. These stablecoins were then cleverly routed to multiple EVM-compatible chains using bridges like Stargate Finance and Multichain.
This attack, coupled with the SEC lawsuit, has put Binance in a tight spot, leading to some significant decisions concerning the trading pairs available on its platform. Binance.US has removed numerous trading pairs and temporarily paused the OTC Trading Portal.
