According to a statement issued by CEO Adam Aron, the official mobile app of AMC Theatres, the world’s biggest movie theatre chain, now allows customers to purchase tickets using Shiba Inu and Dogecoin.
Users must upgrade their app to the most recent version to pay using the two most popular meme currencies.
AMC finally introduced Shiba Inu and Dogecoin support to their website in early March, thanks to BitPay, the biggest cryptocurrency payment processor.
After Aron conducted polls on Twitter to evaluate interest, the firm opted to adopt the two cryptocurrencies in late 2021.
Billy Markus, a co-founder of Dogecoin, has urged that the movie theatre be required to provide use statistics in order to see how popular the new payment choices are. Markus argues that encouraging “competitive purchasing” would increase demand.
After first announcing the intention in August, AMC began taking Bitcoin, Ethereum, and numerous other cryptocurrencies in November.
AMC’s Adoption of Cryptocurrencies
AMC’s adoption of cryptocurrencies began in August 2021, when Aron revealed that the company will accept Bitcoin payments before the end of the year.
That list grew over time to include coins like Ethereum and Bitcoin Cash, with social media fan campaigns finally persuading the company to accept Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. In October, AMC began taking Dogecoin payments online for gift cards.
In conjunction with Spider-Man: No Way Home and as a treat for AMC shareholders, the company has also created its own NFT collectables through the WAX blockchain. The Batman NFTs, a sidechain scaling solution for Ethereum, were distributed by AMC via Palm.
However, AMC’s crypto ambitions might go beyond supporting coins and tokens and producing NFTs. Aron told CNBC in October that the company was looking at being a successful cryptocurrency issuer as well as a cryptocurrency redeemer.
