Meta has refused to be left behind by other 3D social media platforms and now, has decided to follow in the footsteps of platforms like Rec Room and Roblox.
However, if you are a VR content creator in Horizon worlds, then you might be making some money through Meta’s social media metaverse platform soon.
Reports coming out from the company shows that “a handful” of creators will be able to market virtual items within Horizon, or effectively put parts of their virtual world behind a pay gate. There will also be goals-based bonuses to some creators if they could hit a certain engagement metrics.
In a video recorded in Horizon on Monday afternoon, Mark Zuckerberg announced these new monetization tests where he argued on the necessity to experiment with these kinds of monetization opportunities to settle on a winning formula. “This will be a really iterative process,” he said. “We’ll see what resonates with the people using the worlds, and then we’ll build the next round of tools.”
According to a press release, the test will initially be limited to “handful creators,” the Horizon monetization tests will only be available in the U.S. and Canada, and only users who are at least 18 years old will be able to make purchases.
A screenshot revealed shows an in-world purchase dominated in U.S. dollars. Meta in the past has suggested that its cryptocurrency efforts might prove relevant to its metaverse projects, however, the company has recently been more focused on its financial business, the Meta Financial Technologies, regarding the conventional payment for VR environments, Stephane Kasriel the unit’s head said the name change signified its plan to “build for the metaverse.”
Meta is also hoping to attract more creators to Horizon, last fall, the company launched a $10 million fund for creators in Horizon, and on Monday, the company said it would soon begin to release assets to simplify the creation of Horizon worlds.
