Hong Kong University to Build Virtual Campus

Hong Kong university of science and technology has disclosed plans to build a mixed virtual reality classroom called Metahkust that will let people from other latitudes attend classes like they’re in the same space.

HKUST shall debut its Guangzhou campus on September 1 with virtual hosting in a mixed reality setting.

“A lot of guests might be overseas and can’t attend [the opening], so we will host it in the metaverse,” says Pan Hui, chair professor of computational media & arts, HKUST Guangzhou campus.

The university metaverse project is to virtually link the two campuses, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, and by doing this, the project will bring an end to the geographical barrier that students face when attending classes.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, many schools across the globe diverted to the use of apps like Zoom for continuity of lectures, Hui in his statement thinks learning through the metaverse would be a better alternative for students as the metaverse offers a higher level of interaction, he posited that;

“Through virtual reality, you can feel as if you’re there. How you interact with students around you will increase your learning outcome.”

To make the virtual campus possible, the university will install a series of sensors and cameras to feed information to the metaverse system.
