📰 Yello Paradisers!
Late on September 9, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s X account (formerly known as Twitter) was hacked. His father, Dmitriy Buterin, confirmed the breach. The compromised account was used to disseminate a phishing link that siphoned off cryptocurrencies and NFTs from unsuspecting victims.
📰 The Phishing Scheme
The hacker posted a malicious link under the guise of celebrating “Proto-Danksharding coming to Ethereum.” This link promised a free commemorative NFT with a 24-hour time limit, pressuring victims to act swiftly. On-chain investigator ZachXBT estimates that the hacker has drained around $691,000 worth of assets.
📰 High-Value Losses
Among the stolen assets was a CryptoPunk NFT worth 153 ETH or approximately $250,000, owned by Ethereum developer Bok Khoo. Most of the stolen NFTs have been sold, and a large portion of the proceeds remains in the hacker’s wallet.
📰 Accountability Debate
A user on X argued that Vitalik Buterin should take responsibility for the hack and compensate the affected users. The user claimed that if the founder of any traditional finance platform posted links leading to fraud, they would be obligated to compensate victims or risk a class-action lawsuit.
📰 Speculations on the Hack Method
While some suggest that the hack could have been a SIM swap, ZachXBT disagrees. He notes that Vitalik is a significant enough target that an insider could have been paid off to execute the hack.
